For over 15 years, Sodexo has been providing food services for the staff and patients across all 37 Nuffield Health hospitals. With this new contract worth an annual £19 million, Nuffield Health has chosen to extend its collaboration with Sodexo for an additional five years from 2028. This renewal strengthens Sodexo's commitment to delivering tasty, nutritious meals and supporting Nuffield Health's mission to build a healthier, stronger nation.
Sustainability is central to the partnership between Sodexo and Nuffield Health, with the aim of helping patients and staff develop healthy eating habits and lifestyles with minimal environmental impact. To encourage and expand choices, Sodexo will particularly emphasize sustainable eating and promoting vegan and vegetarian dishes.
As such, Sodexo has obtained the bronze accreditation from the Soil Association's Food for Life Served Here Award for the quality and local sourcing of the food services provided within the 37 Nuffield Health hospitals.
To go further, Sodexo and Nuffield Health are partnering with Greener by Default, a not-for-profit organization that applies behavioural science to food policy, to launch a study across all 37 hospitals. This pilot, one of the largest of its kind in the UK, aims to encourage patients and staff to make more sustainable food choices while maintaining freedom of choice. Insights gained from this pilot will inform Sodexo’s future sustainability initiatives for other healthcare clients.
Sodexo has also enhanced the patient dining experience through its Everyday app, allowing in-room ordering while providing nutritional information about their food choices.
Additionally, Sodexo plans to introduce carbon scoring for menus by the end of 2025 in collaboration with Eaternity. This initiative aims to help Nuffield Health achieve its carbon reduction targets and further support their sustainability goals.
Sodexo also continues its efforts towards food waste reduction with its WasteWatch program. Since 2020, in Nuffield Health hospitals, this program has reduced food waste by 36%, preventing around 52 tons of waste. This effort has saved 362 tons of CO2, the equivalent of 1.2 million bathtubs of water and over 95,000 meals.
